HOW TO LIGHT THE HANUKKAH CANDLES

To light your candles.... The candles are placed in the menorah from right to left, but they are LIGHTED from left to right. That is, the last one placed in the menorah is the first one to be lit. (One, on the first evening, two on the second evening, three on the third, and so on, until the eight nights of candles are lit. They are lit with the "shamash" (servant) candle and is not counted as one of the eight candles. As the lights are lit, the following blessings are sung or recited:

Ba-ruch Atah A-do-shem, E-lo-he-nu Melech ha-olam, asher, kidd'-shan-nu b'mits-vo-tav, v'tsi-vanu, l'had-lick-ner shel Chanukah.

Blessed art Thou O Lord our G-d, Ruler of the Universe, who has sanctified us by Thy commandments and commanded us to kindle the lights of Chanukah.


Ba-ruch Atah A-do-shem, E-lo-he-nu Melech ha-olam, she a-sah nis-sim la-avo-tenu, ba-yamim ha-haim, baz-z'man ha-zeh.

Blessed art Thou O Lord our G-d, Ruler of the Universe, who has wrought miracles for our fathers in the days of old at this season.


(followed by this blessing, recited on the first night only...)

Ba-ruch Atah A-do-shem, E-lo-he-nu Melech ha-olam, she-hech-yanu, v'ki-manu, v'hig-gi-a-nu la'z'man ha-zeh.

Blessed art Thou O Lord our G-d, Ruler of the Universe, who has kept us in life and has preserved and enabled us to reach this season.
